Why Didn’t Google Kill Waze ? “he Google maps users who just want to consume won’t be distracted by all the extraneous community features of Waze.” True?


wazePopular traffic application Waze was acquired by Google in June 2013.

Its crowd-sourced traffic and navigation data currently feeds Google Maps. Nevertheless Waze remains a stand-alone downloadable app on iOS and Android. Out of curiosity, why didn’t Google just fold it into one? Is there another reason other than taking time for engineering efforts to merge the two apps?

It seems that by popular request Google has been making small changes in Google Maps and Waze by adding additional functionality to both. Google added Waze accident reports to Google Maps, and now Waze has been updated to bring some Google Maps features to the app. Waze for both Android and iOS has been updated to put Google Search front and center in the user experience.

But will Google ever get rid of Waze? Perhaps Google designers realized that integration would simply kill the real purpose of current Google Maps.
